COMMON CONDITIONS WE TREAT

BURSITIS PAIN DOCTORS

Our bursitis pain care doctors at Spine and Wellness Centers of America use evidence-based treatments backed by science to treat chronic bursitis pain related to inflamed bursa.

Bursitis is a painful condition that occurs when the small, fluid-filled sacs known as bursae become inflamed. Bursae are fluid-filled sacs that act as a cushion between bones, joints, tendons, and muscles. The most common locations for bursitis are in the shoulder, elbow, knee, foot, and hip. Overuse during physical activities and sudden injury can cause the bursa to inflame. Then, the bursa sac fills with extra fluid, which puts pressure on nearby tissue and causes intense pain. The most common causes of acute bursitis are repetitive motions that put pressure on the bursae around a joint. Simple activities like lifting something over your head repeatedly, playing tennis, or throwing a baseball can cause bursitis when done repetitively.

Bursitis inflammation causes an increase in severe pain at night. Sleeping when you have hip bursitis might feel impossible. You could try alternating your sleep pattern to a more pain-reducing position, use a pillow between your knee, or place a wedge-shaped pillow under your hip.

Weather changes in humidity, barometric pressure and temperature can bring extra aches to patients with bursitis pain. Cold weather can also lead to an increased risk of bursitis and injury during exercise.

It is best to avoid running and jumping as they can make hip pain from bursitis worse. We ask our patients to walk gently until the bursitis pain goes away. Home remedies to relieve the pain of bursitis include:

Rest so you don’t overuse the affected area.

Icing the area to reduce swelling.

Apply dry or moist heat, such as a heating pad or by taking a warm bath.

Risk factors for bursitis include gout, repetitive motion, and overuse of joints, certain occupations, injury, rheumatoid arthritis, spine problems, and metabolic conditions such as diabetes.

Bursitis often requires aspiration, corticosteroid injections, or surgery. Cortisone shots (also known as steroid shots) can offer fast-acting relief of inflamed muscles, joints, tendons, and bursitis with only minimal discomfort.

TYPES OF BURSITIS

Trochanteric Bursitis (Hip Bursitis)

Pain at the point of the hip is the main symptom of trochanteric bursitis. The pain usually extends to the outside of the thigh area with sharp and intense pain followed by the entire hip area becoming more of a constant ache. Events such as falling onto the hip, bumping the hip into an object, or lying on one side of the body for an extended period in time can cause hip bursitis.

Elbow Bursitis

Elbow bursitis can be a painful condition, but it often goes away rather quickly with treatment, proper rest, and rehabilitation. The pain is worse during movement, so it is important to restrict and rest your entire arm. It is important to note that when a bursa is inflamed, it becomes very painful, even during rest.

Gouty Olecranon Bursitis

Gout flares can inflame a bursa, most commonly the elbow bursa, but also in the toes. The pain from gout alone is quite severe and often occurs suddenly. Overuse, injury, and sometimes an infection from gout or rheumatoid arthritis may cause gouty olecranon bursitis.

Septic Bursitis

Bursitis caused by infection is pretty rare, but when an inflamed bursa becomes infected it needs to be treated promptly. Infected bursae can be a serious complication, which can lead to septic bursitis or long term or permanent damage to the joint. An aspiration of the affected bursa can be sent to the lab for testing on the synovial fluid which will help identify many but not all cases of septic bursitis. The main symptoms of an infected bursa are red and warm joints, acute pain and tenderness of the bursa, fever or chills, joint pain and an overall feeling of sickness.

Calcific Bursitis

When Chronic (long-term) bursitis is left untreated, it can result in a build-up of calcium deposits in the soft tissues, resulting in permanent loss of movement to the area.

Ruptured Bursa

A ruptured bursa is a serious condition. While bursa sacs do not explode, the tissue tears, causing a release of the inflamed synovial fluid into the joint space. It is important to seek immediate help whenever you suspect bursitis or have joint pain. Simple testing can diagnose bursitis and get you on your way to feeling better.

Our dedicated team of award-winning bursitis pain relief doctors with backgrounds in orthopedics, neurosurgery, pain care, and rehabilitation will create a long term treatment plan individualized to you, your unique pain and your goals. We conquer pain without surgical interventions in most cases using cutting edge pain relief techniques for bursitis pain care (some of which are completely new to pain care and only offered by our doctors).

We believe that no one should have to live a life of pain. When bursitis happens, it is important to seek help fast so we can take care of it before it gets worse. Bursitis can be treated in just one visit in most cases. Many of our patients have expressed their gratitude because our chronic pain doctors are able to treat the bursitis pain with as little as a cortisone injection. Our goal is to target the source of your individual pain with the most advanced pinpointed pain treatment for your condition. Not everyone’s bursitis pain will be the same. Our doctors and nurses spend a great deal of time with our patients, listening to symptoms and then we construct a detailed pain relief treatment plan. We will determine if your pain is coming from one or more sources, something that other doctors might not even consider when treating your symptoms.

Patients suffering from acute bursitis pain may be prescribed pain relief from in-office steroid injections, soft tissue injections, or trigger point injections. Often anti-inflammatories are prescribed in conjunction with other acute pain treatments and the condition resolves. In other patients, acute pain is a precursor to a life of chronic pain, so it is important to determine the cause of pain and administer the correct pain relief procedure for lasting relief of bursitis pain. We take many insurances like Cigna, Sunshine Health, Paradigm, Tricare, Medicare and many more. See the bottom of our home page for the list.
